An Overview of the Pakistan Floods in 2025.
What Happened:
Since June 2025, Pakistan has been struck by devastating floods driven by unusually heavy monsoon rains, river overflows, and glacial melt. Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Sindh, Balochistan, and Azad Kashmir are among the affected provinces.
Areas & Causes:
Major flood impact in Punjab, especially around the Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlej rivers.
Cloudbursts and outbursts from glacial lakes exacerbated flash floods and landslides in the northern and mountainous regions of KP. Urban flooding in many cities due to intense rain, poor drainage, and overflow from rivers and nullahs.
Social and Human Impact:
The death toll is rising, with over 900 deaths reported across the country. Millions displaced. Several million people were displaced or lost their homes in Punjab alone. Numerous villages were submerged (thousands), and roads, bridges, and communication networks were damaged.
Losses Economically and Agriculture:
Losses Economically and Agriculture Estimated cost of damage around Rs 409 billion (≈ US$1.4 billion), about 0.33% of GDP. The agriculture sector was hit hardest.
Farmland: In Punjab, approximately 1.3 million acres were submerged, destroying rice, sugarcane, cotton, and maize crops.
Inflation in food prices, disruptions in the supply chain, harm to irrigation and transportation, and secondary effects Government Assistance and Response alerts issued by provincial disaster agencies and the NDMA.
mobilization of boat and helicopter rescue operations, as well as evacuations from risky locations. Coordinated efforts between federal and provincial governments to manage relief, prepare for continued rains.
Broader repercussions Pakistan's vulnerability to climate change—increased rainfall intensity, melting glaciers, and extreme weather—is highlighted by the floods. Economic growth forecasts have been revised downward due to agricultural loss.
As recovery efforts continue, major concerns include food security, inflation, and displacement.
