FLOOD RIVER: ISLAMABAD/LAHORE

Authorities have issued a warning about a high flood in the River Ravi at Shahdara tonight (Wednesday), citing Punjab's "exceptionally high" risk of flooding as a result of heavy rains and excess water released by India from its dams. An Indian government source stated that as a result of the heavy rains, India warned Pakistan about the possibility of flooding downstream and opened all gates to major dams on rivers in its portion of the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) region. All Times Pakistan News Pakistan claimed Islamabad received the warning and issued an alert for flooding on three rivers that enter the nation from India. truth social media platform

The Ravi at Jassar is experiencing a high flood of 202,200 cusecs, which the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) claims could rise to 229,700 cusecs. The river is currently flowing at 72,900 cubic feet per second at Shahdara in Lahore, putting low-lying areas like Shahdara, Park View, and Motorway-2 at risk of flooding. The peak flow is anticipated to reach Shahdara between 10 p.m. and 12 a.m. on Thursday, then to move toward Balloki around 9 a.m. Meanwhile, the Indian High Commission has also shared data with Pakistan, on the basis of which the Indus Water Commissioner’s office issued a flood alert.  According to the warning, a high flood is expected in the Sutlej at Ferozepur (downstream), in the Ravi at Madhopur (downstream), and in the Chenab at Akhnoor.

Separately, the NEOC reported a very high flood in the Sutlej, with 100,355 cusecs at Sulemanki and 245,000 cusecs at Ganda Singh Wala. Marala in the Chenab recorded an unusually high discharge of 769,481 cusecs, and Khanki in the Chenab recorded 705,225 cusecs. Officials reported that Khanki's traffic has begun to decrease. Authorities stated that serious challenges had been posed by sudden rises in the Ravi and Chenab over the past 24 hours, necessitating precautionary evacuations from vulnerable areas. Social Media In Punjab, thousands of people have been relocated from floodplains. In Shakargarh, Narowal and Gujranwala districts, rescue teams have evacuated dozens of people trapped in floodwaters after heavy overnight rains swelled rivers and streams.  Parts of Narowal's roads, schools, and villages were submerged, and Gujranwala's Head Khanki road was submerged, preventing access to nearby villages. In Dadu, Sindh, floodwaters from the Indus inundated villages and damaged crops.

While Mangla is nearing the three-fourths mark, the Flood Forecasting Division reported that Tarbela Dam had reached capacity. Low to medium floods were recorded at several barrages along the Indus, including Guddu and Sukkur, though the Jhelum, Kabul and other rivers were flowing normally.truth social media platform

PRIME MINISTER SHEHBAZ SHARIF ORDERS:

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif presided over an emergency meeting to examine the situation brought on by heavy rain and the possibility of flooding in the Chenab, Sutlej, and Ravi rivers. The prime minister was briefed on the most recent flood conditions by the chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). To ensure prompt alerts, the prime minister instructed authorities to further enhance early warning systems. He stated that the NDMA had already distributed 5,000 tents to the affected Punjabi regions and directed that the delivery of additional essential supplies must continue immediately. In addition, Shehbaz directed immediate administrative actions to be taken in Gujrat, Sialkot, and Lahore to combat potential urban flooding. NDMA is in charge of all rescue and relief efforts, as directed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. NDMA maintains close communication with civil and military agencies, while NEOC stated that its control room is fully operational at all times. As rescue and relief teams remain on standby, it has been urged on residents who live along riverbanks and waterways to relocate immediately to safer areas. "Water levels in Punjab rivers are going to start dropping" Earlier in the day, PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia stated that a pause in rainfall in the upper catchment areas would likely cause the water levels in major Punjabi rivers to begin receding. He said that the easing trend comes after days of heavy flows, particularly in the Sutlej, Ravi and Chenab rivers.

Kathia said that the Sutlej had been in a "high flood" situation for five to ten days but that the flow at Ganda Singh was now steady at 245,000 cusecs and was no longer rising while she was speaking at a press conference in Lahore. Floodplains along the Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab rivers have been evacuated as a result of the situation. Kathiya confirmed that between 20,000 and 25,000 people were evacuated from the Ravi and Chenab floodplains last night. The PDMA chief said one of the primary challenges is the River Ravi, where the flow at Jassar had risen to more than 200,000 cusecs, causing the predicted surge at Shahdara tonight, before moving towards Balloki around 9am on Wednesday.

At Shahdara, the Ravi can hold 250,000 cusecs. We expect the flow to remain between 180,000 and 190,000 cusecs, which can easily pass through,” he said.  The river reached a height of 346,500 cusecs in 1988, when it experienced its last surge of this magnitude. Kathia stated that although efforts to evacuate had been completed, the sudden rise in water levels in the Ravi and Chenab yesterday posed a significant obstacle. He continued, "We are confident that the water will pass safely through Shahdara and there will be no casualties." He urged people to stay out of floodplains and said that all rescue and relief teams were still ready. Army intervention in rescue efforts Early in the day, the provincial government summoned army personnel to assist in the relief and evacuation efforts as well as the rescue of individuals from already flooded areas in the Punjab province. Following the Sutlej River's overflow, floodwaters have inundated several areas, including Kasur and Ganda Singh Wala, triggering the rescue and relief operation. Boats are being used by troops to transport flood victims to safer areas. During the operation, residents’ belongings and livestock were also shifted to secure areas.  Relief camps have been established jointly by the Army and district administration for those displaced by the floods.
